How did the housewifes wash clothes in the 1740's?

Housewifes may have used left over animal fat which when boiled down to form tallow and mixed with wood ash would form an abrasive substance something like caustic soda. This I am sure would remove the dirt. Probably not to nice to wear afterwards though
