I have just found out from someone who lives in a house the same as mine, housing assocation that she is paying 36 less per month than me,i was accepted for single occupier allowance, and pay every month online, i thought i was paying the right amount, can i relaim the over payment????
Are you sure that the houses are the same Band? - check it.
The only 'discount' you can get is 25% off the gross amount payable, for single person occupancy in the property. But you say you are getting that - it will say so on the statement from the local council - or ring them.
I mind on reading a story where someone complained about paying too much Council Tax. It turnt out hers was correct but everyone else's in her row was wrong so theirs was increased.
There are plenty of reasons why someone else in a similar house (is it truly identical? No internal improvements in one over the other for instance) might be paying a different council tax without it automatically meaning you have overpaid. Both amounts may well be right or indeed she could be under-charged (in which case she'd no doubt be delighted at you dropping her in it!).
I work in a local taxation office and we get alot of people saying things simlar to this but they are rarely correct. You may be paying differently because you have different banded properties or (more likely) you are using different methods of payment. Payments for council tax are usually made over 10 months but they can be extended two 11 or 12 or shortend for any munber of reasons.
To clear up, you might as well call your local tax office to clarify the situation.
