And 'looks' polish. Is there a polish 'look'? I stayed in a region in London full of poles, and they seem much more homogenous than other nationalities (jawline, eyeset, nose shape, cheekbones). Is this true or am I imagining things?

Yes..

Look i am not suggesting your question is meant as racist, but it can easily be construde as the old nazi race viewpoint.. which i know/hope you did not mean... for the record i think the poles are a wonderful people brave and courageous, and don't look any different to any other european country.

I think there are distinct looks and features for most nations - for example, if we say someone looks Italian - we have a picture in our head. Here in Sweden there is definitely a Swedish look and it's easy to tell Finns who live here. My husband and some others says there is a distinctive British (noteably English) look. I am Scottish but look more Italian.
Sorry to hijack the thread but Rev Shirls, you're needed in Travel re: Sweden. Cheers.

Good grief, I cannot believe that anybody could possibly infer anything "Nazi" from your question.

Luckboy, you are of course correct: Poles don't look any different to other Europeans like Icelanders or Potuguese (-;

Eh? Are you sure there's no difference?

I didn't agree with Hitler's view of the world because his facts were wrong, not because I thought his ideals were wrong. I think his ideals were very wrong too, but ideals would never let me change my idea of what 'fact' is. Sure, it would be easier to be less racist, if one were so misguidedly inclined, if we all looked the same. But we don't. There's every reason to believe that country to country differences should emerge. Most people in Poland mate with other people in Poland, not England. A distinctive strain should emerge. I don't know if it has, but when I see people from Poland all together, there seems to be a distinctive "look". I should know, it's present in 1/4 of my family! Sorry for the lack of polished argument..

Like goldy and bronzey except made of iron.

poles are usually identifiable by being very long, thin and generally rounded.

often they wear brightly coloured rectangles of material attached to their upper bodies, but when something sad happens, they drop these to a lower position

I grew up in a predominantly Polish area of suburban Detroit, and there was always talk of "too bad he/she has that Polish nose."  We also used to joke that anyone wearing white socks with sandals was probably Polish.
Yes, I believe you are right.  Also my husband is first generation Russian (North West) and looks it, as does my son.  How on earth, luckyboy, did you construe the question as having any racial element!!!  I suppose simply anything could be turned into a racist comment if you want it to be.
