Problem with mouse.

I installed a new mouse but it seems to have a mind of its own.

I don't seem to have complete control of it as sometimes it goes from one side of the screen to the other, or disappears for a few seconds.

I have slowed it right down on the mouse options in the control panel, but it makes no difference.

Any help please.

if it's an optical mouse try it on different surfaces.

An optical mouse does not work well on a mouse mat unless it is non-reflective. Try using it on the desk with nothing underneath.
