I  have, since a child, heard the saying "If ifs and were pots and pans", but I don't know the rest of it. Help.

Various second lines have been added to this over the years, including: "The world would be a kitchen" and "The whole world would be tinkers". The latter is based on the fact that. in the old days, tinkers used to carry out repairs on kitchen utensils during their travels.

I have heard it as "we'd have no need for tinkers" meaning that there would be no need to get old pots and pans mended because there wuld be so many new ones around

I've always known the saying/rhyme as

If  "ifs" and "ands" were pots and pans, there'd be no work for tinkers hands"
