Ha ha. Shrinking sheep! Ha ha again!
This falacy arises from the phenomenon of woolen garments shrinking after washing, especially in hot water. This happens because all those lovely woolen fibres were fluffed up and crinkled togeter when the factory manufactured the woolen yarn from which the clothes were made.
It's a sort of microscopic knitting and stretching to keep the yarn together, yet get the most out of the original fibres.
When the wool gets dunked in hot water the fibres crinkle in tighter bundles and hey presto, midget pullovers.
Now the one about buttered toast always falling sticky side down and cats landing on their feet... I am smearing puss as we speak. Results of experiments toasted (I mean posted) shortly.
