strange noise

I have a 97 (p reg) polo and recently it has started making a weird noise. When I accelerate, generally only when in 1st -3rd (sometimes 4th and 5th) it makes this scraping noise. Any ideas what this would be?

Check the gearbox oil level.

Make sure you havn't got a wheel clamper / traffic warden stuck under your car.  Have a quick look at the underside of the car if you have then just carry on driving. :-)

Is this polo a diesel if so the chances are you are heading for the same problem i have now! Disaster! the bearings may be going in your gearbox these gearboxes are prone to this i am now told! trouble is they are so hard to find second hand and new are well lets just say its cheaper to get a new car! Take it in the garage if it needs a repair to the gearbox get it done itll save you time and money in the long run. I do not know if this could be the same for a petrol gearbox but it is a possiblity Good luck
