Question Author
or master cabin?

The following from answers.com

A private cabin or compartment with sleeping accommodations on a ship or train.

On a Royal Navy ship, the Captain sleeps in the Wardroom
Sorry - he dines in the Wardroom
Look up the word cabin in The Oxford Companion to Ships and the Sea.page 125 Quote. the first cabin as such was probably the -------,an open space under the poop deck in a galley where the admiral or captain had his bed.Not 100% sure, and as such I am still checking.
On NCL cruise ships ALL rooms are called staterooms, but have no alternative as yet.
I think heatherglen is correct, unless someone else knows different

daithebus: I looked at the Oxford Companion to Ships on Amazon, just to see what sort of comments were made about it.  It had a good feedback and my husband was really interested in it, so it's cost me over 15 to buy one.  You should be getting commission from Amazon!

Jesting aside, thanks for the info about it, it does sound interesting and no doubt will be a useful source of info. as would all the other Oxford Companions if only I could afford to buy them!!  I'll have to start going to the library.

You are still wrong Sequin because the only time that a Captain eats in the Wardroom is when he is invited or when there is an official function.  He has his own cabin, he has his own cooks and stewards and he has his own dining area.  He occasionally invites officers from the wardroom to dine with him.

Anyway on more pressing matters, all references that I have found for Stateroom, refer to it as a private cabin. Nowhere can I find it being a LUXURY private cabin and you know how thorough Vic and Dave are.  Only ever heard of the Captain's cabin on an RN warship.

Brittanica has the answer as stateroom - I'll prob go with that.
