This may be due to saving resources within the colony or simply that there is nothing to immediately do. Ants that 'awake' from this apparent sleep are definitely sluggish at first, so it may be a kind of mini hibernation despite it being quick at times. Worker ants entering a chamber where ants are asleep sometimes have the effect of waking the others, perhaps with the message that now there is work to do. They do not sleep on their side so far as I know but stand normally.
