on a gutair what is the difference between" low action" and " high action"?

The 'action' is the distance between the strings and the fretboard. If they're nearer it's low and if they're further away it's higher. It's usally adjustable. When it's lower, it normally means the instrument's easier to play, but it needs to be carefully adjusted otherwise you get things like 'fret buzz', where the string rubs against frets further up the board than you want it to.
