My Dad has obtained a medal which is dated 1925-26 and is for the Charlton Thew Challenge Cup. It has the swing bridge (Newcastle upon Tyne) on the front and an inscription "Miscellaneous Dept Winners T Newcomb 1925-26" on the back.

Any ideas what the Charlton Thew Challenge Cup was? We are guessing a rowing competition but its a pure guess.

I've already tried google.  Nothing comes up even for Charlton Thew....
I have recently met some of my Newcastle relatives.
One of them also has a Charlton Thew Challenge Cup Medal which sounds similar to your Dad's, except that it is dated as 1935-1936.
We are also trying to find out what is was for, as the relative it belonged to has long since died.
Are you able to read the inscription on the front?
'fo?titer defendit triumpha??'

From the little I know about our relative, I'd be surprised if it was for rowing but that's also a pure guess.
Oops!
I should have looked that up before I posted!
It actually is 'Fortiter Defendit Triumphans' which translates to something like 'Triumphing by Brave Defence' and is the motto of Newcastle Upon Tyne on the City Coat of arms.
It is also in the chorus of the Royal Grammer School (RGS) song.
The RGS is a school in Newcastle which used to be boys only. Is it possible that the person who received your Dad's medal may have gone to that school?
I will have to make further enquires into the school angle.
