I went for a job interview today at a well known call centre

and was told that I talked 'too posh' for that type of work!

How on earth can you be 'too posh'? What type of accent should I adopt at my next interview?

You need to be from Scotland or Mumbai to work in a call centre! Thats the only accents I have heard when I call certain places!!

I had people take the **** out of me when I moved up north (Leeds then Manchester).

I'm from Shropshire and lived in Wales for 4 years and it was natural to say things like barth and graaass and bus with an "uh". Saying that my dad's an english teacher so I had it drummed in from birth :)

I still don't sound northern to northerners but people back home say I sound northern now lol :)

Next time put on an eastern accent that people can hardly understand and have to keep asking you to repeat what you said, you will fly the interview.

I worked for a camera maker once, on the phone to the US... (not my choice, they had told us we were going to handle the european calls in our own languages).

I appear to have a "somewhat" american accent, so I was fine...but after a few nationality-related abuse (some who were a bit simple thought I was indian!!!!), I took great pleasure in talking to them in my best BBC English impression, whilst telling them my name was Fatimah.

A Dutch guy in the office even changed his name to Conor (or something) and told them his was an Irish accent. Ah the laughs......lol

I must admit that I get increasingly infuriated with my banks telephone centre and have on more than one occasion asked to speak to someone who is actually IN England!!

Like others on here I live in an area with a very broad accent but I don't sound like them at all and quiet often get called posh .

Several times I have spoken to Indian call centres working for Tiscali.

I have seldom spoken to more polite, well spoken and knowledgable people. They are brilliant.
