My sons go too stay with him once a fortnight, I don't want too upset ther papa but think I should talk over this with him inasmuch as how is he going too cope. Anyone with experience of ths type of situation?

He's not going to harm them, but he could gradually forget who they are, and why they're there. I personally think that visits should be supervised at all times, and see what caring services are available in your locality.
Your sons are quite young and too lively to be left with someone with alzheimers = absent minded & forgetful. Rather than put the responsibility on your papa why not either stay with the boys or have the papa over to visit, where you can supervise your boys.
If there is alcohol in the mix it's quite likely your sons may drink it.
