For one thing, you need to prove that the research has a decent chance of showing something.
Very surprising, therefore, that one UK uni (Southampton?) got a pile of cash for their psychology department for just this. I think they were able to demonstrate that many of the subjects reported the same experience, and that the reports they gave of the view they saw from the 'ceiling' was too accurate to be invention. Pretty cool! I'll try and find a reference for you.
I have myself had several near death experiences. One was when driving and we nearly had a bad crash, and this guy had a huge wipeout (black guy, black glasses, black suit, black car). He was ok though, but we fishtailed all over the place.
We got into work and my Mum phoned up from 600 miles away to check if I was ok. She hadn't been told anything about the crash, but my sister had just had a scary dream about me, with...black guy, black suit, black car.
That's it, as it happened. I have no explanation.
