is it correct that car dealers can no longer display a car's mileage or tell you what they claim the mileage is? We have been told today by a dealer that they cannot disclose any car's mileage, as it is now against Trading Standards??? I think it sounds ridiculous. Is he pulling a fast one?? Ta

They can normally give you a mileage but say that it is unwarranted - ie they do not guarantee it. A lot of receipots will be preprinted with that on as well.

 

If they have taken a car in 'in good faith' that has been clocked they don't want to be liable.

 

Go to a site like www.parkers.co.uk and it will give you tips on how to check if a vehicle is clocked. If you don't trust the dealer - my advice is to not buy the car though.

Surely they're not going to claim that the mileage is anything other than what's "on the clock".

I am a business manager in the motor trade - and of course it is not against the law to disclose a mileage. It is just that you are not allowed to represent it as a true mileage unless you are 100% certain that it is correct. Most dealerships will get around this by having a mileage disclaimer on the order form or in the car. working for a main dealer - we would not knowingly sell a car that we were not happy with the mileage of (it is not hard to tell if you know what you are looking for). This is not to say that it is never done (I have seen plenty of cars that we have traded out appear at back street dealers with lower mileage).

You'll note that these car dealers have had theses stickers on the dash for years - saying that they are unable to ratify the milage - this is to cover their own backs should the engine have done three times that which is stated.

Some dealers will give an AA or RAC warranty which include a milage check and validation.
