dts vs 5.1 dolby digital???

 Ive got a 5.1 dd vdv player, and it says I can play dvds that have dts encoded on them. Whats the diffrence between dolby and DTS... and why isnt available on all dvds? Is DTS better quality sound? Or is dolby better?

There's not a great deal of difference between DD and DTS. DTS (Digital Theater Systems) is supposed to be slightly better sound than DD (Dolby Digital). It has something to do with a higher bit rate for DTS.

I've got a few DTS dvd's and can't notice that much difference. It is a little clearer, but I suppose the higher quality sound system you have the more difference you might notice.

A lot of DVD players have the ability to play DD and DTS dvd's, but you tend to need a separate decoder to listen to them (A DD/DTS Amp). Although there are a few players that have this built in to them.  DTS was not so poplar when it first came out as DD was already proven to be extremely good. It was a bigger thing in the US than UK. But now you will notice more and more dvd's have both DD and DTS sound tracks.
