For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.If he pays for just one seat, then he has to be able to fit with both armrests down, as it is a requirement for take off. If he can't fit, then he has to buy a second ticket so he can sit on both seats.
Of course if the plane is not full then I'm sure they'd let him sit across two without paying for the extra seat: but you don't necessarily know if this will be the case when booking.
I hear some american airlines are increasing the width of their seats as people are in general getting bigger. Definitely a good idea: more comfortable for the bigger among us and more room for the rest of us!
