Sending a a moneygram

I want to send a smal amount of money abroad to a friend. Whats the best way of doing this so that it is safe and can be converted into their currency. I have seen signs for a moneygram but dont know how they work.

PayPal is safe, easy and not too expensive. The recipient needs an email address though

For a Moneygram you handover your money in a UK Post Office (or other agent), it's converted to the foreign currency and put into the Moneygram computer system. Depending on the country and amount, you may be asked for id.

You phone your friend and he takes ID to a local agent (usually a bank) and gets his money - within an hour or so. You can arrange that he has to give a password of sorts to get the money.

Western Union works similarly - though most offices here tend to be in newsagents and the like.

Neither is particularly cheap
