Sending a a moneygram

I want to send a smal amount of money abroad to a friend. Whats the best way of doing this so that it is safe and can be converted into their currency. I have seen signs for a moneygram but dont know how they work.

You phone your friend and he takes ID to a local agent (usually a bank) and gets his money - within an hour or so. You can arrange that he has to give a password of sorts to get the money.
Western Union works similarly - though most offices here tend to be in newsagents and the like.
