wahing machine not rinsing properly

is there any reason why my washing machine just does not seem to be rinsing properly. I use the same setting and cycle that i've ALWAYS used but the last few washes when i take the clothes out there are patches of soap marks so it obviously not rinsing properly. Any ideas?

Check that you are running on the same temperature as usual. If you have accidentally put it onto a cooler wash the powder may not dissolve properly. Otherwise the heating element or thermostat could be dying.
Are you in a hard water area and if so how old is the machine? There may be limescale build up on the heater element that is causing it to be less efficient.

Hi evedawn,
I would also suspect a blockage, particularly if it is taking longer to empty. Check where the emptying hose(at the back of the machine) goes into the waste pipe-a vertical pipe, or possibly it goes into a connection on the sink waste-if it does, disconnect at waste junction, prod into sink waste, and also up the pipe to check/remove muck. Another possibility is a pump blockage, sometimes got at through a plate on the front of the machine - look for round thing with screw knob in the middle-undo knob to remove front of pump.
