And if you are finding it difficult to read a longer book a week, carry a book with you all the time. Read it on the train, bus, while waiting for people, at lunchtime, before bed, even while walking down the street (but watch out for lampposts !). I used to be able to read an average novet (300 or so pages) in a couple of days doing things like that, but I do read novels quickly and am slower with factual books.

"The Collector" by John Fowles. An obsessive, socially awkward pools winner kidnaps a middle-class girl and keeps her in the cellar of his house. From the 60s, but still gripping and brilliantly written. A short read (I read it in a day) but doesn't skimp on ideas.

"The Road" by Cormac McCarthy - haunting post apocalyptic story about a father and son on a ruined Earth. Written in a stark, spare style.

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly by Jean-Dominique Bauby is under 250 pages and one of the best books I've ever read.
