I would imagine that it is mostly historical.....until quite recently -men werre the ones who went out to work-they were also the ones to whom training was available.Therefor.....when cooks/chefs were needed in the homes of the wealthy.....or for businesses,,it was only men who could take the jobs...I t would have been deemed unsuitable for a woman. She could only-if she was a member of the lower classes-cook in the local inn or pub. Now that women are starting to catch up...all will change.

Every year I camp in Scotland for at least a week. We have an annual competion as to who can serve up the best 3 course meal, bearing in mind we have no kitchen and only a couple of gas rings together with the camp fire. At least one course has to be hot. The trick is to get everyone sh!tfaced on single malt before you dish up.
