Trip down memory lane
For anyone who is intereted, ITV4 are running a series (Thursday lunctime) called "Big Match revisited", which shows The Big Match programme of 30 years ago. This week's show featured Arsenal (whose under-soil heating enabled this match to be played) against reigning Champs, Nottingham Forest. Arsenal, with new record signing (450 grand) Brian Talbot making his debut in a 2-1 win, which kept The Gunners 4 points behind current leaders.............................wait for it, Mighty......................West Bromwich Albion. Loved the dug-outs at Highbury. Three wooden chairs in each. The other game shown was Leeds v Man City and new manager malcolm Allison.
Brilliant TV for those of us old enough to remember, and those too young to realise that there was football before Sky and The Premier League.

Used to be our delight on a Sunday afternoon unless my local tv station in their wisdom showed Soccer Sunday with Hugh Johns introducing Cardiff Swansea Newport Wrexham Bristol City or Rovers - How did we cope ?
Sunday newspapers in those days actually had match reports instead of the garbage they churn out these days - them were day,s we were glad to have price of a cup of tea !

And I notice this weeks main match is Man City v Chelsea. We finished rock bottom that season with one of the worst Chelsea teams ever. Two years previous, we had been promoted as runners-up to Wolves and above third placed Nottingham Forest. Forest went on to lift the title and two European Cups in the following three seasons, Chelsea went back to division 2, and almost into oblivion. Ah, those were the days.
