surely the opening monologue about the number of people who died constructing the canal is fiction as is the way they disposed of their corpses....does anyone have further info?

The title of the movie is Basic...starring JT and SLJ....the movie opens with a panoramic view of the panama canal with a monologue which describes the number of fatalities among the builders of the canal. Using the way the authorities found  to "dispose" of the corpses it set the tone for the movie  which conveys that Panama has its own ways of dealing with things....and I am curious as to whether the monologue is fact or fiction.....

I dont know too much about it but people died in droves due to malaria until someeone came up with a way to eradicate mosquitos.
