sharp pain in the butt

I have experienced a very, very sharp pain in my left upper buttock which is like a stab with a pin which comes and goes without warning....Any ideas- cause & cure??

Could be, but I thought maybe it was something more simple. Could a small hair keep catching on your underwear? That happened to my sister once!
Also, and this is doubtful - but I once sat on a needle! It was totally embedded, and had it not been for some cotton still being strung through it, I hate to imagine. Kept getting this sharp stabbing pain, so got my husband to take a look and see if he could see any small cut or anything. "No," he said, "but there's some cotton hanging from you." It was only by trying to bat it off, that he realised it was attached to the now-unseen needle, and it had to be pulled out very gently!

Thanks for the response guys- I think maybe my job & computer are factors that cause this.....'prolonged sitting' - one of the causes of sciatica !!!
