Bass Sound Dampening

Is there anything I can do to a speaker in order to dampen the bass sounds coming from it. I was thinking of putting a sponge (like a washing up sponge) into the hole at the back of it, but I'm not sure. This is just to stop any thumping sounds that can be heard in the next room.

A sponge is more likely to reduce the treble. The best way to reduce the bass is to open the back completely which would allow the opposite phase waves from the back of the speaker to interfere with tose from the front. Removing it from the enclosure entirely would dramatically reduce the bass output.
When in an enclosure the speaker will compress and decompress the air in front of it as it moves forwards and backwards, thus creating the bass sound. When not in an enclosure, as the speaker moves forward, the air insead of being compressed will tend to rush arround to fill the void at the back.

It is a dj bedroom/studio setup. I was wondering what this unit you mentioned to fit to the speaker is and where you can get it from?

As has been said the bass end is very difficult to eliminate. Do everyone a favour and buy some headphones.

Its very difficult to hide a deep base sound,Have you got an EQ button,if so you could put it on jazz or rock or depress the base button.Or last but not least change the speakers!!

placing sonething spongy over the bass speaker will help. Also sit the speaker on a spounge mat.

This may be a bit obvious, but - why not turn down the bass control on the amplifier?
