Ipod Touch 8GB - can i connect to internet wirelessly ?
12 Answers
Hi, just thinking about buying the 8GB new Ipod Touch from Argos (i have vouchers left over from xmas). Just wondered if it was possible to connect it wirelessly to my wireless router (orange livebox) and view the internet on it ?
Is the above easy to do ?
Also, how restricted is the internet on it ?, can i view the same pages on it that i would be able to on my PC ?
Best Regards,
Andy

You can even watch the BBC Iplayer through it. Really impressive.
The internet is pretty much what you can view on your home PC. I don't think it can play "flash" web pages. But pretty much everything else.

Cheers for the quick reply Stoofur !, that's good news (and what i wanted to hear :) !. I don't really go on any java based sites etc so that shouldn't be an issue, i didn't realise shops had wireless access !! - that's excellent. Sounds like a really handy device, i'm out to get one after work !!

You can easily connect to the internet wirelessly on the iPod Touch. If you connect your computer to the internet wirelessly, it is just a case of putting in your wifi networks' name and password.
There are also wifi hotspots about that you can connect to while you are out and about. When I first got mine, I used to entertain myself by using the Touch to find unlocked wifi networks and use the internet.
The iPhone/iPod Touch is probably the best mobile device for viewing the internet. However, there are a few limitations. At the moment you cannot view most movie formats including flash movies and animations that are embedded into websites.
That said, YouTube and the BBC iPlayer work brilliantly.
Do you know what version you are getting. Argos may still be selling the 1st Generation one. Obviously, the 2nd Generation one is much better, especially for games.

If you do not have a Apple Store near to you where you can have a play with one before you buy it, try looking at an iPhone in a O2 shop. They are vitually the same.

also, one further thing i was concerned about. How easy is it to set up with itunes ?, you see i already have itunes on my PC from when i had the old ipod 1GB (the ones without a screen which you can pick up for 30), so will i need to un-install itunes for it to recognise that i now have the Ipod Touch ?

You will need to update to the latest iTunes v.8, which you can down load from here

When you plug in your iPod for the first time, the Touch will connect and it will take you through the set-up in easy steps.

AM I MISSING SOMETHING ??
I installed Itunes latest version, restarted, run ituned, plugged in ipod touch but i didn't get any "onscreen instructions" as the manual tells me i should !!!!
I cannot do anything with it !, i switch it on with USB connected but it just shows a symbol of a USB cable and Itunes logo even though i have got itunes open, i have set up an account with my visa card (which was accepted), and it is connected via USB ????

Visa account stuff is only required to use the iTunes Store, not the device itself.
Make sure it's directly connected to the computer, not through a USB hub or anything like that. Also ideally on a port at the back of your computer, not the front.
Finally, you did restart after downloading and installed the latest iTunes?
