However, for me, one of the joys of visiting Paris is travelling by Eurostar (from 29.50 each way, from St Pancras, Ebbsfleet or Ashford).
Once you get there, travelling around is cheap and easy, using the RER trains and the Metro (or the buses if you're not in a hurry):

Paris has a reputation for being very expensive but you can still have fun (and eat well) on a budget. For cheap accommodation, try this website:
http://www.hostelworld.com/
(Don't be put off by the word 'hostel' in the URL. Just use the 'Additional search options' to look for guesthouses and budget hotels).
For cheap (but lovely) food, head to the Latin Quarter. (Take an RER train, on Line B or C, to St-Michel Notre-Dame). There are loads of restaurants which will serve you a 3-course meal from around 10.
One of the best ways to see Paris is from the river. Some of the guided tours cost 'an arm and a leg' but the regular river bus service, Batobus, is much more reasonably priced. The service runs between Notre Dame cathedral and the Eiffel Tower, with stops at several major tourist attractions en route. A ticket is valid for unlimited travel for a whole day, so you just hop on and off as you please:

I live near Paris and as cities go it's a beautiful city. There's so much to see and there are so many cafs and different restaurants to suit any taste and any budget. As any city there's pollution but nothing more than any other european capital.
As to enjoying it, all depends what you want to see and do.
It would be worth your while to see for yourself and then tell friends that it is worth it. A weekend is always short to take in the atmosphere so stay near the centre.

>thanks for that heard alot of negative stuff
I cant think of what negative stuff (except perhaps the cost with the pound so bad against the Euro).
I have been all over the world on business, and Paris is probably my favorite city. It is one of the GREATEST cities in the world.
The great thing about Pairs (unlike say London) is that buildings above 8 floors are banned in the central area, which means all the lovely old buildings are still there, so when you are in the centre you get great views.
Most of the modern skyscrapers have been built right out on the edge of the city, in an area called La Defence, so the centre has been preserved as a beautiful city.
It is a GREAT city to visit in the spring, and a wonderful city for walking around (apart from the mad French drivers).
Here is a picture from the Eiffel Tower showing a view over Paris (allow a minute to load as it is a big picture)

Try to go in March or April as it is lovely there at that time of the year.

Hi, i went to Paris in April 2007 loved it, we went by coach from Folkestone tunnel on an all inclusive with new market travel and stayed just outside Paris, cant say anything bad about it at all. http://www.coachholidays.com/newmarket_holiday s.phtml
Here is just one picture of Paris that shows you how fascinating it is, and why it is such a great city:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/ a/a8/Jardin-des-tuileries.jpg
This picture is taken in the Tuileries gardens (right behind the Lourve museum).
The pointed spike in the centre in on the Place De Concorde (the spike is an ancient Egyptian relic).
Behind that is the Arc de Triumphe (the picture is misleading and it is about 2 miles away).
All the cars in front of the Arc de Triumphe are driving up the famous road called the Champs Elysees, a huge wide road built by Napolean. A very famous road full of designer shops.
And at the very back is the La Defence area, with all the skyscrapers. Again the picture is misleading, they are about 3 or 4 miles away.
So just in that one picture you have so many things, and that is just one small part of Paris.
