Why is is impossible to fold a paper? more than seven times, regardless of size

It's all to do with thickness.

Each time you make a fould you double the thickness of the paper, 1,2,4,8,16,32,64,128 .... by seven foulds you now have 128 layers of paper to fold....

I think eight is the maximum, though I agree with Hamish about the reason (though not about his original spelling of fold!)
