diarrhea in puppies

We brought 2 labrador puppies on the 31st December 2008, they have had constant diarrhea from bring them home, we took them straight to the vets on the 2nd January 2009 was given Pro-Kolin+ by the vets but it has not worked, they are happy running around into everything but I am still concerned, I am taking them to the vets again today but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. I am feeding them on beta puppy food as stated by the breeder, so I have not changed their diet. One is 9 weeks old the other is 8 weeks on Monday, we did not realise this until we got home, but the vet assured us that pups can be sold from being 6 weeks old, and suggested we had them both vaccinated on Monday when the other is 8 weeks old. They are both eating and drinking fine like any normal labrador does.

Dont feed them any cows milk for a start. To clear the Ds keep them off all food for 24hrs and only give them cooled-boiled water (to stop dehydration). Then back to puppy feeds till their stools are more settled.

Sorry but you can't starve puppies at that age, the vet will tell you that, just take advice from the vet.

labs usually eat well even if they are off colour - its a breed trait. agree not to starve pups but it does sound as though the puppy food may be the cause (even temporarily) why not try giving them very small meals five even six times a day of boiled rice and maybe white fish (very careful of bones) make the meals small and don't add anything else. what's their worming history? good luck and keep us updated

Have you spoken to the breeder? If they are a responsible breeder then they will be willing to offer advice and will want to know about the puppies health.

I would be very cautious about getting them vaccinated on Monday - vaccinations should only be given to healthy animals.

It could just be the excitement/change of homes.

I would see what your vet says today, they will probably take it more seriously as the original treatment should have cleared things up.

I would also ask the vet about feeding. Puppies need a good quality food. Don't starve them whatever you do.

How many times a day are you feeding them? Are you giving them any treats etc? People often don't realise that their dogs are eating far more than what is in their bowl!

Also could they be picking up (and eating) anything in your house/garden? Do you have any other animals (like cats etc) that the pups could be nicking food from?

I agree with Kita ....do not let them have their injections whilst they are under the weather, they must be fit for them.Boiled rice with chicken is good and of course white fish[boneless] hope your babies soon pick up.g

ok so
no.1 do no vaccinate your pup (vets make over 300% profit)
until they have no more diarrhea.

no.2 never ever ever starve a dog for 24 hours until they are over 16 weeks. unless diarrhea has continued for more than 3 weeks. this is not just a medical thing but also physicological

no.3 take them off there food. feed rice and chicken (white rice not brown) for two weeks and then very slowly mix in their dog food. feed 4 to 6 six times a day .

no.4 is doesnt matter what food you feed your dog as long as it has no gluten and no ash and has a min of 23% protein.
