If you get the little computer icon of the wi-fi in your toolbar (near the clock) right click that and instruct it to view available networks. Click the network that corresponds with your router and click connect. That should open a small window asking for a WEP or WPA number, enter the number you have which I presume is a default code.
When things are up and running read your manual (online?) and change your encryption to safeguard yourself against bandwidth theft.
Hope this helps.
If it didn't, at least I got my typing practice in :-)

Some questions:
1) What version of Mac OS X? 10.2., 10.3, etc? Jaguar, Panther, Tiger?
2) Click Apple logo top-left, then About This Mac. Then click More Info. On left pane of resulting window, click Network. What does it list in top right pane? Is there Airport listed? If so, click it --- what does it say in bottom right pane for Airport?

My question 2) was just to see if it said airport.
This is the name of the network card. It was just to make sure the card was there in the first place, and functioning.
To connect to a network:
Click apple logo top-left, then system preferences. Then 'network' icon.
Choose the airport section, and turn it on and choose a network you want to connect to. You'll be prompted for a password.
