Tiscali Wireless Broadband set up problems
8 Answers
HI, hope someone can help me. I have just got broadband with tiscali and a wireless router. I put the installation CD in my PC and go through the steps. When it gets to the final step it comes up with an error message, "your computer does not have a static DNS entry". I am completely clueless and don't know what to do. The PC has windows vista if that makes a difference. Can anyone help? Please?!

2) Usually when setting up a router for the first tme you have to do it with a WIRE first, then set up wireless.
Is your laptop connected to your router with a cable ?
3) If you are trying to set up wi fi on your laptop make sure the little switch on the laptop for wifi is turned on. Most (all?) laptops have a switch to turn wi fi on and off.

Can I ask you a few questions which may help us solve the problem:
1) You say you have just got tiscali broadband. Did you have broadband before or is this the first time?
2) Is this normal home broadband or some sort of business broadband?
3) Does the broadband work WITHOUT the router in place.
4) Did tiscali supply the router, or did you already have it, or have you just bought it.
5) Did tiscali supply the installation CD you are talking about?
6) What make is the router ?

>Errrr... I would very much doubt it will!
Surely if they have a modem on its own that would work.
I have Virgin cable and my broadband works quite happily without a router and just the modem (I know an ADSL routers includes the modem).
I have little experince of ADSL but can you not get an ADSL modem without the router ?

Personally I would phone Tiscali and ask them for help.
You dont say if you are connected to the router by a wire or not, but I would certainly connect the laptop to the router with a wire FIRST, and get that working, THEN try to get wi fi working.
Trying to get wi fi working on broadband for the first time is just adding an extra layer that you dont need.
Get it working with a wire first, then at least you have proved the broadband is working OK.

>3. no, does not work without it, should it?
I may have confused you (as ChuckFickens has pointed out)
For broadband to work all you actually need is a modem.
If you had JUST a modem then you could at least try to get that working BEFORE you plug in the router.
If you have NOT got a stand alone modem then you will have to try it with the router.
An ADSL router has a modem built in to it so you may well not have a stand alone modem.
