I'm sure a very similar question has been asked here before. If not here then it was on the DigitalSpy forums. Have a search for "gas pipe outside" both here and at DigitalSpy.
The quick answer is YES, it is perfectly acceptable from an installation and safety point of view. From an aesthetic point of view, they will soon oxidise and blend in more.

i'm a corgi registered gas engineer. its not ideal but it is perfectly legal to run the pipes on the exterior of the house. i do it as a last resort as said b4 they can be knocked by a car or they could also fall prey to scrap metal thieves as copper is very expensive.
id prefer to run them inside the house but this is often not possible with fitted kitchens, cupboards etc

As far as i am aware the Installer must carry out a RISK ASSESSMENT, and if there is any danger of the pipes being at risk of damage or dislocation, then the installer must take steps to ensure that all practicable steps are taken to minimise this. Commercially, we normally get round this by installing screwed steel pipes - albeit domestically this is less utilised and boxing is employed if there is a proven hazzard. Ultimately, if you are concerned by the installation you can insist the installer sends you a copy of the risk assessment, to which you are entitled, and can seek a second opinion.
