Remote access for mobiles?

I have been told by a friend that it is possible to remotely access my mobile phone's voicemail, from any standard line in the UK, but I am unsure how.  He said that if you call the voicemail, then enter your PIN, you can hear any messages (should you have any.)  Is this true?  Do I need to dial hash/star first?  I have had a fiddle around but can't seem to work it out.  Any help appreciated!
