On the whole, I think wards shoudl be single sex wherever possible.
I had a spell on intensive care once - had to sit on one of those cardboard potties and pee in front of the whole ward. Half were unconscious but there were no screens (this was in 1982) and it was very embarrassing for me at that time.
Thinking of the older generation in particular, my mother would be mortified if she was on a mixed sex ward and was in danger of flashing her nether regions at the chap opposite.
My husband deals a lot with elderly patients and a lot of the elderly women like to have a man on the ward - they get disappointed if it is all women.

There will obviously be those that don't like it, but honestly, if I was ill enough to be in hospital, I wouldn't care a jot if they were treating pigs in the next bed!
Think of the chap opposite. Might bust his stitches!
Oh and I wasn't referring to men as pigs there lol - I meant our poricine friends!
Whilst i think it's a nice idea to implicate it would cost so much and we'd end up denying sick people beds because they weren' the right gender!
personally it doesnt bother me which sex is on the same ward as me
On a serious note. There was a woman on radio last week whose teenage daughter was put in a mixed ward after emergency surgery. She woke up to find a young drug fuelled male in the bed opposite yelling obscenities that would have made J. Ross blush.
Our local hospital still is, predominantly, single sex wards. I think ICU is a little different. I also think it depends what area you come from, but out of all the times I've been on a hospital ward (quite a few) - they have always been all-female apart from the aforementioned intensive care.
My mother was in a mixed sex ward after suffering a stroke when she was in her mid seventies and she was terribly embarrassed. Doctors would examine her without closing the curtains properly and the old men on the ward always seemed to have their bits on display,
I'm often in the high dependancy unit where there are mixed sex patients and it doesn't bother me . One night though I had crept down in my bed towards the bottom of it and I was woken to find a male patient , naked , climbing into my bed . He had been up to the loo apparently from another bay and had got lost , then found what he thought was his empty bed !
