iPod error message (-53)

Help needed please with this error message? I have had iPod 60GB with colour display for over 3 years, (this was my 3rd iPod), I have never had a problem syncing with any of my previous PC operating systems. Have had Vista Ultimate for 18 months, no problem, until a couple of days ago, out of the blue when syncing starts, then freezes followed by this -53 error message. I installed iTunes 8.0.2.20 when it first came out, never an issue here before either. I have followed the 5 Rs and all other advice I can find to no avail. Have searched apple discussion forums, and it's unbelievable I can't find any reference to error -53 anywhere on any of Apple's sites. My fear is I have a hard drive failure on the iPod.

Sigo here...turned out problem was with my external hard drive where the music was stored, and not the iPod itself, nor iTunes. Have replaced the hard drive and all works fine now (apart from only being able to transfer 70% of the stored music from the old LaCie drive as the rest was corrupted)
