burning audio CDs

Most blank CD-R can store many songs but what if you only want to burn say 4 and then at a future date add some more , can the unused part of the CD-R be used ? I have tried to do this but the PC keeps asking for a blank disc and of course even if there was only one song on it ,it would not be blank.

once data has been written onto a CD-R it can not be overwritten. if you wish to add more data at a later date then i suggest you find some CD-RW's. these are essentially the same but allow you to overwrite data on the disc.

Yes thank you I thought that was the case but I don't want to overwrite I just wanted to add extra songs as most of the disc is empty. My reason for using CD-R is because it can be played just about anywhere whereas some of the RWs can not .

You can't do it..

You can do what you want with data CD's but not audio. it's called a multisession disk but if you do try and make a multisession audio disk normal CD players will only play the first session.

Thank you all , that's sorted that out . I had first tried i Tunes as I obtained the songs from them in the first place but they don't offer an answer service , you can ask but you get no answer from iTunes themselves.

r u talking a music CD (full after about 12 tracks)
or a CD full of music (about 200 tracks in MP3/wma format)

aka as chuck says a multisession CD?
which is possible - but not a good idea
the trouble with multi sess cds is if you get a glitch while writing ... you loose the lot

much better to save all the tracks on your HDD - when you get enough ... make a CD.

if you want to use it in the car ... get a box of CDrw
that way you can burn a few ... and wipe/expand the tracks in a "safer" way

I only wanted to burn 4 singles on to a CD for a special occasion but because there was some unwanted applause on one tract I had to scrap it and burn another one, therefore I had a CD-R which was 90% empty and I wondered if I could use that empty space , but the PC asks for a completely blank disk hence my original question. Thanks for your help and information.
