can i send cash to egypt??

can anyone tell me. ... I have just sent my granddaughter a small amount of cash in a christmas card within a small package, but apparently it has been open by the egyptian post office, with a note saying that i can't send cash. Firstly how did they know there was cash in it. And is it illegal to send cash???? i'm very confused and annoyed

Many countries do prohibit the import of cash in the mail.

From the Royal Mail website:

Currently, the following countries all prohibit the sending of cash:

Armenia, Australia, Belarus, Bolivia, Botswana, Bulgaria, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, China (excluding Hong Kong and Macao), Comoros, Cuba, Czech Republic, Dominican Republic, Georgia, Hungary, India, Iran, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Laos (People�s Democratic Republic of), Latvia, Lebanon, Lithuania, Malawi, Montenegro, Namibia, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Norway, Oman, Pakistan, Poland, Rwanda, Serbia, Saudi Arabia, Swaziland, Tajikistan, Uganda, Uzbekistan, Yemen, Zambia, Zimbabwe.


Egypt is not listed, so ought to have been OK, though I guess things change from time to time.

There are other countries that only allow cash in registered mail - maybe Egypt is one of them. I can't find a list

As to how they knew - if it was a small package then customs probably opened it, as they are entitled to.

Customs officials throughout the world are entitled to open any postal packet upon its arrival in their country. (Within the EU packages can only be opened if there's a specific reason to suspect illegality. Elsewhere it's the norm).

If you send anything other than letters, postcards and documents to a non-EU destination, it's imperative to attach a CN22 customs declararation form. (Available, free of charge, from any post office counter). If you fail to do so, the contents of that package are liable to be confiscated (even if those contents do not otherwise contravene postal or customs regulations). So maybe your package was intercepted because you forgot the CN22?

Nope...I did put a CN22 form on it.

Checked with local PO - cash to Egypt is a prohibited item unless sent international recorded delivery.

try sending by Moneygram from any post office, but they will have to collect from a Moneygram agent[ not their post office] at the other end, gets there within 2 hours.

Egypt is very strict with regards to cash, I don't think you are even allowed to take much Egyptian cash home to be honest and the same when entering the country as they want tourists to exchange their money within Egypt.

Unfortunately some of their officials can be corrupt but they have every right to search your package.

oh, puzzled by the answers on here..sent a couple of Xmas cards to nephews in Australia, both had a Au$20 note taped inside, it was the post office clerk who offered me the tape to do this, and didnt say anything about Australia not allowing money to be sent in to the country...haven't heard from kids (they're 11 and 8) so would they have got their cash?
