9 Answers
Hi all. My son is approaching 12 month's and I just wondered how much milk I should be giving him from then and also he is currently on SMA Gold. Do I need to wean him onto the SMA Follow on milk?
Also, do I need to cut out a milk feed, he has the following: 150ml at 11.30am
150ml at 4.00pm
210ml at 8.30pm
TIA

omg almost a year, times rushing by so fast!
From what i can remember from little CRX, i just changed over to cows milk once Id run out of formula after 12 months.
It wont matter how many bottles he is having really so continue with the 3 until he drops one himself.
Just make sure that it is full fat cows milk and not skimmed that you give him.
If hes eating a balanced diet then theres not really any need to give him the follow on milk at all.

Its seems so long ago now (my two are 7 & 8 now) but, I think that they still liked a bottle of milk when they woke up - usually about 6.30am. They would have breakfast about 8.30 and usually had milk in their cereal and a drink of juice with it. Mid morning they had a snack (raisins, cheese & fruit) and milk in a cup. Lunch about 12.30 - with a drink of water or juice, sleep, then one of the pro biotic yoghurt drinks (with a straw) and a snack when they woke up (2.30ish), Water or juice with Dinner, and a bottle or cup of milk before bed.
We used follow on milk with my eldest as he wasn't a good eater and was sick whenever he had a cold or any bug at all. When we started him on the probiotics, that stopped. My younger son always had a good diet so we moved him straight to cows milk - we never weaned betwen the different milks, but that might be quite a good idea.

Hi, when my little girl got to 1, I changed to SMA Progress. The tin says it is more nutritionally beneficial than cows milk, I think. It also says that from 12 months, they only need 350mls daily. I'm telling you all this from memory, by the way. I split this amount between her milk on waking, and the milk she has with our last cuddle in her room before bed.
Everything in between I give her water, out of a Tommee Tippee cup, flavoured with a bit of freshly squeezed orange. She goes through about 2 cups a day. They say as long as they have plenty of wet nappies, they're properly hydrated.
My little girl is 2 next week so am getting ready to give it up all together, which will be hard as they just love milk at this age don't they??

This is only my opinion but I don't think any of these follow on milks are necessary after the age of 12 months as long as the child is getting a balanced diet.
I also don't think it is necessary for them to have milk through the day especially if its from a bottle. Roughly a pint of milk a day is the recommended amount but dairy products like yoghurts can be taken into account as well.
It is recommended that at 12 months babies are weaned onto cups instead of a bottle. The sooner you do this the easier it should be!

Thanks Tigwig, sounds like good advice to me. Thankfully he has been drinking from a beaker since he was 6 months. I'm pretty sure that he gets a good balanced diet so I will cut out the follow on milk when he turns 12 months.
Perhaps I will cut out the milk during the day and replace with a snack. I haven't been giving him milk first thing in the morning for a while as he never missed it, maybe I will give him milk in the morning with breakfast and bedtime?
