Ok i've asked this before but didn't really get very far, this is word for word what the computer says. We apologize for the inconvenence, but windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might of caused this, if your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose last known good configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked if a previous startup and attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the power or reset button was pressed, or if you aren't sure what caused the problem, choose start windows normally. Safe Mode Safe Mode with networking Safe Mode with Command prompt. Last known good configuration (your most recent settings that worked) It doesn't matter which one i choose it gives this answer everytime. WINDOWS COULD NOT START BECAUSE THE FOLLOWING FILE IS MISSING OR CORRUPT: \ WINDOWS\ SYSTEM32 \ CONFIG\ SYSTEM. YOU CAN ATTEMPT TO REPAIR THIS FILE BY STARTING WONDOWS SETUP USING THE ORIGINAL SETUP CD-ROM. SELECT 'r' AT THE FIRST SCREEN TO START REPAIR. I haven't got this disk and haven't a clue how to get it, could anyone give me some advice and point me in the right direction, my little girl loves her computer and wants to use it again, can anyone give me some simple instructions thanx in advance.

I had a similar thing recently, not being too 'technical' minded I was scared of doing something wrong and totally wiping my PC!!!!!

I popped the computer into my local computer shop and they fixed it for 20 quid.

Maybe I could have done it - but I am too chicken to try things like this (although I have cleared a virus in the past).

If you have a trusted computer shop nearby it might be an idea to give them a ring and see what they say.

Sometimes it is not worth the hassle of trying to fix it yourself, especially if it is relatively cheap.

lol yep i am, it hasn't been connected to the internet for the last 5 years, my daughter is only 6 and just uses it for paint and playing her pc games, i don't allow the internet on her computer. (not sure a 6 yr old would need it). i'll probably just take it to a shop then and if it doesn't work i'll have to let her use her dads pc lol
Have you got a coa sticker anywhere on the computer, with the serial key. If you have, you just need to borrow an xp disc from a friend and use this. If you can borrow a disc, then post again for instructions, it`s very easy to do.
Has her dad not got an xp disc with his computer?
Question Author
yeah i have the serial number but her dad hasn't got a xp computer its windows vista same as my laptop and i don't know anybody who has a windows xp computer with a disk. thanks anyway.
If you post your email address (not really sure if that`s allowed on here) I`ll contact you and send you a copy of my disc, along with instructions for the disc. I don`t like your child being unable to use computer, just for the lack of a disc.
