Directional Nonsense

Listen to this......a friend of mine insists that if you are standing on the east coast of Ireland looking east you are looking towards the east coast of England. Where does he get this from: he's adamant about it. How does one convince him that he's full of, well, blarney?

gonzo00.........Edinburgh is on the east coast of scotland, BUT is west of Carlisle which is on the west coast of England. So, Edinburgh is west of Carlisle. Looking east from northern
Ireland, you would see the most westerly part of Uk that would be Edinburgh which although on east coast of Scotland is WEST of Carlisle.

You must accept the fact that Edinburgh is west of Carlisle, then the rest is obvious.

sorry squad but when i look east from n.ireland i see the coastline that has upon it stranraer,portpatrick etc,and they are definately on the west coast of scotland and thus the uk...maybe i'm not following..ah f**k it, i give up cos now my head hurts too!

Incidentally, My Grandma once told me that she was once sitting on a bench over looking the bay in Scarborough, N Yorks, and watched the sunset over the sea..................work that one out

dot....the Castle at Scarborough is on a headland with a 360 deg. view, which views the sea in all directions.
Your grandma could be sittin on a bench in the Castle grounds with a view of the sun setting in the west.

He is looking at the east coast of England (past the west coast) and indeed he is looking at everything east of him... including his own backside!
