I live in the wilds with no telephone land line connection ,I am connected to the internet via a antena on the roof lined up to a large ariel on top of a distant hill ..and get a very good signal to my desk top via an ether net modem ,I want to connect a lap top to the system do i need to disconnect the ether modem and replace it with a wireless router ,or do I need both ...

all you need is a router without the modem included as you already have this. Then run a cable from the modem to the router and bobs your uncle! you're now wireless!
Where on earth do you live... and how much is your internet costing you.... it must be a fortune!!

one important thing to consider first, is your connection always on, or do you have to tell the computer to connect before you can use it?

if it is always on then any cable router will do the job just fine, if you have to tell the computer to connect to the internet it gets a little more complicated as you will need a router that can tell the modem to connect instead of the computer doing it.

thanks for the help tigersam and chuckfickens ...I live up in the mountains in spain chuck hence no land line etc internet 43 euros per month + free internet telephone also no land line rent to pay I dont know how this compares with UK but I am glad to have the connection
