Well... from the idiotic to the sublime..
There a re a number of products available here in the U.S. that I sure could be had in the U.K. If not the same brand name a similar one.
We hav a redwood deck that I finished originally with Thompson's Wood Protector.. it's done a very good job and needs refinishing only each three years or so and pressure wash it once a season. We have fairly harsh winters since we're in the western U.S.
Since then, I've a friend that I helped build a large, multilevel deck and he used cedar. With cedar it's best to leave it for about 6 months to allow the oils to leach out somewhat. He then finished it with Cabot Decking Stain. It is a semi=transparent finish, meaning it has a light color component and one can select the shade you desire.
Lastly, I've had experience with Man-o-War Marine Grade Spar Varnish, which I think is made by McCloskey and Co. It is probalby the nicest looking finish, but needs a little more maintenance... and it is expensive.
Best of lusk!
