scrapped moped
2 years ago my son gave his old moped to the local scrap dealer. recently he has been getting letters from dvla stating he should tax the
moped or face a fine. he has rung them up several times and also written to them explaining he no longer has the moped. he has now received a letter threatening to send the bailiffs round if he does not pay 80 in the next 70hrs! the logbook was given to the scrapdealer so surely he was responsible for sending it off to the dvla and it was not my sons responsibility.

I recall a similar incident happening to me back on 2004. I'd bought a car from a dealership and px'ed my old car that they took at scrap value (saved having to sort it out myself). A few months later I got an invoice for recovery from the hard shoulder of the M27 by a breakdown garage. I phoned them up and explained the situation, I had the counterfoil but they didnt ask to see it. I didnt hear anything else after that.

oh rite. thanks for your replies. i,m not sure if he did send the vc5 off. i do know that the scrap dealer would not acept the moped without the logbook so it could have been an oversight by my son. would have thought the dealer would have mentioned this when he picked it up or contacted us afterwards.
Your son should write to the DVLA explaining the situation, he should send it recorded delivery.
your son should have detached the relevant section of the V5 and given it to the scap dealer, he should have then sent the V5 to the DVLA, it sounds as though the scrap dealer is in the wrong here, as it is the responsibility of the seller to send in the V5
