I'm looking for a recipe for the USA-type biscuits that are like our scones, I think it used buttermilk (and where can I get that?)

Pillsbury used to sell them in the States,  you just opened the pack and popped them in the oven. Can you buy those here?

You can buy buttermilk in dairies, and major supermarkets like  Morrisons, Sainsburys and Tescos sell it.

My mum used to use sour milk when making scones as she said it made the mix lighter.

Why not try mixing plain yogurt with milk to approximate buttermilk? It works in pancakes!

Try using "bisquick"  It's a dry mix you can get in most supermarkets here in UK, you can make biscuits, american style pancakes, even dumplings with it.

Here's one that works quite well;

Put 2 cups of self-rising flour into a large bowl.

With a pastry blender, cut cup of unsalted butter (we prefer lard... I know, I know) into the flour, until the mixture is crumbly. (It should be the consistency of small pearls.)

Add cup of buttermilk and stir until all of the ingredients are moistened.

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead lightly, three or four times ONLY. Too much kneading makes the dough tough.

Roll the dough to inch thickness and cut into 2 inch biscuits.

Bake on a lightly greased cookie sheet at 450 degrees for 10-12 minutes, or until golden.

Best served from the oven with real butter and Bre'r Rabbit Molasses (Yellow Bottle). My grandmother also served eggs, country ham and red eye gravy with these... but that's another story...

(I hope you actually mean biscuits and not the English term for cookies)
