Im thinking about getting a half sleeve on my upper arm, what kind of things do people get tattooed? Most sleeves look great, with things like koi carp etc on, but what else do they have to make up the myriad of images found on a classic sleeve. I want to make mine original, but Im looking for some inspiration!

Please don't. Just think what it will look like when old and wrinkly!!

I really do appreciate your concern, believe me, I have thought long and hard about this and still wont be getting it done for about another year until my design is perfect, but I really dont want this to turn into an argument about the cons of tattoos. When Im old an wrinkly, Id hate to think that Id regret not doing it. But thankyou for your kind concerns, I really appreciate that!
the worst tatoos-girls with skulls in their hair , red indians ,eagles and anything cartoony.
I have a half sleeve with two hours work left to do on it, it's flowers, butterflies and vines with flowers and leaves coming off it. I think when people have the Japanese style sleeves they have the koi carp. japanese warriors, cherry blossom flowers and water usually. I love the Japanese style and want to get a geisha themed sleeve on the other arm.
A friend of mine had an old tatoo he wanted to cover up, it is now a mermaid which follows on into waves and some of the waves turn into dolphins, all mainly in black and blue.  It is an amazing piece of artwork whether or not you like tatoos.  he also has the 'glow in the dark' stuff (sorry don't know the proper name) incorporated into it.  Personally I don't like a lot of different colours in tatoos - I think that's what makes them look dated.  good luck with your design.
I really love the manga/anime girls for tattoos but you need a really good artist who can get the detail right.  I have a manga fairy on my shoulder but the face didn't come out as well as I would've liked because the artist just wasn't skilled enough I think.  It still looks good, but I'm a perfectionist!  Plenty of looking at designs on the net will probably spark your imagination, or maybe you have a friend who can draw who could come up with something unique to you...?  You're right in not rushing into it - when you find the right design it will speak to you, and that may take a while.
You'll always want to go with something that's meaningful to you. Something that inspires you or some unique

You should always get something that's meaningful to you. Something that inspires you or something that reminds you of who you really are. Maybe you have a unique personality type. Maybe you know exactly who you are. Maybe a reminder of your past or a record of your path. Display your alter-ego. Go with something that you know will always be meaningful to you. Convey that thought into an image and find an artist who shares your enthusiasm. A good artist! If you don't trust them then find someone else. If your going for meaningful then this is the way to go. If you just want pretty colors then just look at tattoo magazines or go into a shop and check out their work. If you want meaningful with bitchin colors then think about it a while and make it special to you!
