Renting problem

i have a joint renting contract until October which i have held with my now ex partner (un-married), and i need to move out. Although we have a joint contract she normally pays the rent being on a higher income whilst i have paid for day to day things like shopping and going out. I have somewhere to go but she does not and will need to stay in the flat. The council tax is also taken from my account by direct debit. If i moved out and cancelled this would i be liable for any payments for her to live in the flat? As she has been the one who wanted the relationship to break up does this give me the grounds to no longer have to pay rent etc. and end my half of the contract without her consent.

Something similar happened to me actually: I lived with a friend in rented accom - contract was in joint names. He decided 3 months into contract that he wanted to move out. He had to continue to pay rent or find a replacement tenant, otherwise he was liable to pay rent til the end of the term. It would be helpful to you if you could get your ex to find someone to take on your side of the tenancy, so that you dont become liable for rent. Might also be worth-while having a anon chat to landlord if possible.
