The main point was that a stronger attachment was formed if the offspring had obstacles placed in their path when following the parent. For some reason, a struggle to maintain proximity with the parent created a closer bond. I'm not sure how this would transpose to human children, but as adults I'm sure most of us have experienced that the most difficult to maintain relationships are sometimes the most attractive (at the time, at least!).
