OK... I have at my place of employment a win server 2008 data server running in a full 2008 AD environment and twice in the last 10 days the entire data server has gone "read only" for about 5 minutes and then goes back to working perfectly with no intervention.
There is nothing strange or that looks even slightly relevant in any of the event logs, I have disabled VSS and removed a redundant DPM client that was installed (though that had previously caused no problems). The server has been running fine for about 4-5 months now but this has occurred twice now in under 2 weeks (first time put it aside as a glitch... second time I need to look into it!)
No additional software has been installed since it went live, the only changes to it since first going online are the above mentioned VSS and DPM removal which has been after the problem (so don't actually know if it's helped or not yet). we run CA arcserve for a backup program (not my choice) which is running from another box, but this runs the backups overnight and as the problem has reared its head during the day I'm sure it's not that.
I'm not expecting a miracle answer on this one... but thought I might throw it the way of others brains to see if I can get any hints on what may be the cause.
Everything else on the network has continued to functions perfectly during the data server problem.
(oh and just as a warning... if you remove the DPM client from a 2008 server it takes the whole server off line for about 2min with no warning at all!!! opps that made me popular)

I've been waiting for our third line support ... and they say they have no idea ... no tecnet reports for this ...
the just happened sounds possibly like a bad update ? - but twice for only for 5 mins could be a scheduled something or other (anything in task manager or similar?) did it happen same time ?

Thanks for the response.
Nope not at the same time, first time on a sat morning (causing an awaking of me by a phone call from one of the techs!!) the second time late afternoon mid week.
I hadn't thought of a bad update, I will check the logs for that and generally keep plugging away, if I find a reason I will certainly let you know, especially if it's a bad update!! (prewarned and all that!)
