Just bought a chip fryer for the first time in my life, but what type of oil do I put in it?

the chip pans shown are the old style open pans which are downright dangerous. mine however is totally enclosed with a lockdown lid and thermostatically controlled. its as safe as any other appliance in the house.
Hey lukey, wish you'd posted on here before buying the flippin' thing. I would've recommended you bought the shallow fat fryer.

Much better for you than deep fat frying, and quite a good compromise, IMO. I am very happy with mine, although there's nothing like the taste of deep fried chips from the chippy, is there!

Deep fat fryers are quite safe - the warnings refer to the old open chip pans. Modern deep fat fryers are thermostatically controlled as welshlibranr says.

The scare stories arent relevant.
Totally safe if used according to instructions. I use vegetable oil, scrummy chips, much better than oven ones.
For anyone who thinks I laboured my points last night, with my successive posts, be aware my auto ban kicked in, and to all intents and purposes, my answers seem to be auto deleted as soon as I submitted them. I tried 3 times, nothing happened, so I gave up.

It's an on going problem I have with this site where periodically, it doesn't like me.
