I'm about to plant some potatoes for the first time in my life. Does it matter which way up I put them in the ground!

No, but for better results cut the seed potatoes with a sharp knife assuring one or two "eyes" per piece for planting...

I've always planted them with the sprouting bits upwards. Sprinter53 is right, too early to plant yet.
I grow potatoes but in containers ..
and always have a good crop ...
